Black, White and Grey............Reflections on the Road to Recovery from alcoholism

Reflections....................... on the Road to Recovery

                            (8) - Black, White, Grey

Some of us see things only in shades of black and white. We either like something totally or we don't like it at all. It's either totally good or bad.

Focusing on one flaw leads us to move whatever it is to the negative side of the scale. We have a hard time with shades of grey. Things are rarely all good or bad - black or white. Viewing people, life and things in this "all or nothing fashion" is a demand for perfection.

Demanding perfection in life leads to frustration, dissatisfaction and resentment. All strong ingredients for an excuse to escape through alcohol, drugs or any other addiction.

Do you relate to this observation?

Are you at times not satisfied with anything but perfection?

In what area(s) of your life will you need to accept a shade of grey?

Just this morning I saw a sign that said "Life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful"

  1. There are times when I'm not satisfied with anything other than perfection. The problem is that it's always my perception of perfection. I need to accept gray in all areas of my life and have come to realize that's exactly what makes life such a wonderful, interesting, worthwhile experience. Besides, there is only one Perfect being, but I can do my best to live as God intended.
